Learn more about the fascinating and ever changing world of wine in a hands-on, fun and informative way on our benchmark four week Introduction to Wine course. The course is designed for anyone who enjoys wine and wants to learn more and that's the only pre-requisite!

Week 1 - Welcome to Wineworld
In our introductory week we will focus on the basic principles to build on over the following sessions as we look at the building blocks of taste, how to spot a fault, how to understand wine jargon, how to read labels and discover how to taste, assess and describe wine like the professionals.

Week 2 - The Good, The Bad and The Burgundy
A fascinating look at the impact of climate, topography, and production techniques. In this eye-opening session we focus on just one grape variety, tasting six different styles of it from different parts of the world, all at different price and quality points and produced using different methods. We'll take a look at local wine laws and appellation systems along the way and further develop your skills of tasting and analysis as we go (can you spot the'bad' wine when tasted blind?)

Week 3 - All White?
This week we explore six of the 'noble' and classic white wine grapes, looking at their flavour profiles, ageing potential, commonly used viticultural and vinification methods, and the resulting key styles produced around the world. We will consider food and wine matching potential, and further develop your skills of tasting and analysis.

Week 4 - Simply Red
Following up on our look at white grapes, this week we explore six of the 'noble' and classic red wine grapes used around the world, looking at their flavour profiles, ageing potential, commonly used viticultural and vinification methods, and the resulting key styles produced around the world. We will consider food and wine matching potential, and further develop your skills of tasting and analysis

The course has a limited number of places (15 people) so there's opportunity for lots of quality time, questions and individual attention - with the main focus on TASTING!

You will leave this course having tasted 36 wines from around the world with an expanded knowledge of the wider world of wine, and boosted confidence to further experiment and explore with new and interesting wines. All students will be presented with a Bristol Wine School Level 1 certificate upon successful completion of the course, and will be eligible for a discounted place on our Level 2: Around the World Six Week Course.

All wines and learning materials are included in the course price along with a course file for each student with tasting notes, maps and supporting documents to follow up on the subjects covered each week.

"The Introduction to Wine course turned my whole world upside down. I thought I knew what I liked – but you introduced me to new grapes and new styles of wine. Your passion and knowledge are infectious; the classes were informative, liquid and enormous fun!” - Chris Kenber

"Thanks for the course! it has been excellent and far beyond what I expected. I can now select a wine with more understanding, and I now know why I like what I like so I can choose with more confidence. A long way to go still and lots of tasting to look forward to, but the course has given me the knowledge I wanted to make good start. " - Lynne Elvins
