Port is an iconic, historic and world-renowned classic wine, the perfect match for blue cheese and a must-have at Christmas time. But there is so much more diversity to this wonderful fortified wine to discover.

From wonderfully fresh and fruity white port - to the more traditional styles of tawny, reserve, LBV and beautifully mature vintage, there are many styles to learn about and taste.

During this eye-opening two-hour masterclass we’ll introduce you to the main styles of port, the strict laws that govern their production, and the history behind each of them and how to serve them. We’ll give you plenty of essential tips about how to taste and assess port like the professionals, how to find value, when to keep and when to drink each style, and what to eat alongside them.

Along the way, we'll take a look at port's home, the breathtaking Douro Valley in Portugal, and we'll also learn how producers are introducing this traditional tipple to the modern-day market.

By the end of this course you will be able to identify and assess the key styles of port, and have a broader awareness of the production techniques, history and diversity of the world's most famous fortified wines - all in an accessible and approachable way.

The Great Wine School is run by Bristol Wine School, and wine tutor Tristan Darby has certified wine knowledge and many years experience in both the catering and wine trade. He is the founder of Bristol Wine School, drinks columnist for The Bath Magazine, and a judge for both Bristol Good Food Awards and Bath Good Food Awards. Tristan also trains wine and catering professionals, consults for bars restaurants and private clients, works with cookery schools, and occasionally hosts wine dinners and events with some of the region's top chefs.
